Here's the simple version: codeine is a narcotic that already makes a lot of people feel drowsy, foggy, or relaxed. Motherwort has been reported to have its own mild calming, sedating effect. Put the two together and those sleepy effects can stack up, so you might feel more tired, lightheaded, or slowed down than codeine alone would cause.

I'll be honest with you, though, this concern is theoretical. It's based on how motherwort behaves in lab and animal studies, not on strong human proof, so for many people the real-world effect is small. Still, since codeine can already slow your breathing at higher doses, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing them, especially if you notice extra grogginess.

Codeine Sulfate tablets are used for the management of mild to moderate pain in adults and adolescents when other treatments have not worked well enough or are not tolerated. It is an opioid medication, so it is only appropriate when non-opioid options are inadequate.

Because of its serious risks — including addiction, misuse, and overdose — codeine is reserved for patients who truly need an opioid. Prescribers are expected to use the lowest effective dose for the shortest time possible.
