Pinellia Ternata and Prazepam

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Pinellia Ternata interacts with whole categories of medication. Prazepam falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Pinellia Ternata in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

Moderate

CNS DEPRESSANTS

1 of 2

Why this applies to Prazepam

Prazepam falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Pinellia Ternata interacts with.

Evidence from animal research shows that a Pinellia ternata preparation decreases activity and increases sleeping time. Theoretically, Pinellia ternata can potentiate the therapeutic effect of CNS depressants. Some of these medications include antihistamines, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, tricyclic antidepressants, and others.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Prazepam (Centrax) is a benzodiazepine, so it already works by calming down your central nervous system. That means it can make you feel drowsy, relaxed, and a little slow or unsteady. The concern here is simple: Pinellia ternata appears to have its own sedating, calming effect, so stacking the two could add up and leave you more sleepy, foggy, or off-balance than you'd expect from your usual dose.

I want to be honest about the strength of this, though. The evidence comes from animal studies, where a Pinellia preparation reduced activity and lengthened sleep time. In people the real-world risk is mostly theoretical. Still, since both can pile onto each other, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, especially before driving.

BENZODIAZEPINES

2 of 2

Prazepam also falls under BENZODIAZEPINES.

Evidence from animal research shows that a Pinellia ternata preparation decreases activity and increases sleeping time. Theoretically, Pinellia ternata can potentiate the therapeutic effect of benzodiazepines. Some benzodiazepines include lorazepam (Ativan), alprazolam (Xanax), diazepam (Valium), midazolam (Versed), and others.

Here's the gist: Prazepam (Centrax) is a benzodiazepine, so its job is to calm the nervous system and ease anxiety. In animal studies, Pinellia ternata made the animals more sedated and helped them sleep longer. The thinking is that if you pair it with a sedative like prazepam, the two could push in the same direction and add up to more drowsiness than you bargained for.

In real life that might look like extra grogginess, heavy sleepiness, slowed reactions, or feeling unsteady on your feet. I want to be honest, though: this is based on animal research only, not solid human studies, so it's more of a theoretical caution than a proven problem. Pinellia is also usually only used under a trained practitioner's guidance. Before combining the two, please check in with your pharmacist or doctor.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Prazepam page

“Prazepam (Centrax) is a benzodiazepine prescribed for anxiety, and any drug that calms the brain this directly leaves little margin for supplements that do the same. I'd treat this list with genuine respect.”

About Pinellia Ternata

What is Pinellia Ternata?

  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Cough with phlegm
  • Morning sickness (traditional use)
  • Digestive upset and bloating
  • Throat discomfort

Pinellia ternata is a tuber used in traditional Chinese medicine, most often for nausea, vomiting, and phlegmy coughs, and almost always as part of multi-herb formulas. The raw plant is toxic and must be specially processed before use, so it should only be used under qualified guidance. Solid human evidence is limited, and it should be avoided in pregnancy and breastfeeding.
