These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
Pinellia Ternata interacts with whole categories of medication. Butalbital, Phenobarbital, Secobarbital falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Pinellia Ternata in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
CNS DEPRESSANTS
1 of 2Why this applies to Butalbital, Phenobarbital, Secobarbital
Butalbital, Phenobarbital, Secobarbital falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Pinellia Ternata interacts with.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
The barbiturates in this product (butalbital, phenobarbital, and secobarbital) are already strong central nervous system depressants. They slow down brain activity, which is why they can make you feel drowsy, foggy, or relaxed. Animal studies suggest Pinellia ternata can have a calming, sedating effect of its own, so the worry is that combining the two could pile that effect on top of each other.
In real life, that might mean more sleepiness, slowed thinking, dizziness, or slowed breathing than you would expect from the medication alone. I want to be honest, though: this concern comes from lab and animal research, not human studies, so it is theoretical. Still, because barbiturates are powerful, it is worth running this combo past your pharmacist or doctor before mixing them.

BARBITURATES
2 of 2Butalbital, Phenobarbital, Secobarbital also falls under BARBITURATES.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist: barbiturates like butalbital, phenobarbital, and secobarbital already calm the brain down, and the concern with Pinellia ternata is that it may add to that calming effect. In animal studies, a Pinellia preparation made the animals less active and made them sleep longer. So the worry is that pairing the two could leave you feeling extra drowsy, foggy, or unsteady, with slower breathing in larger doses.
I want to be honest about the strength of this, though. This is only lab and animal data, not solid human research, so it's more of a theoretical caution than a proven problem. Pinellia is also a potent herb that should only be used under qualified guidance. Please loop in your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.
