Pinellia Ternata and Bromazepam

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Pinellia Ternata interacts with whole categories of medication. Bromazepam falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Pinellia Ternata in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

Moderate

CNS DEPRESSANTS

1 of 2

Why this applies to Bromazepam

Bromazepam falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Pinellia Ternata interacts with.

Evidence from animal research shows that a Pinellia ternata preparation decreases activity and increases sleeping time. Theoretically, Pinellia ternata can potentiate the therapeutic effect of CNS depressants. Some of these medications include antihistamines, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, tricyclic antidepressants, and others.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Here's the simple version. Bromazepam (Lectopam) is a benzodiazepine, so it already calms the nervous system, helping with anxiety but also causing drowsiness, slowed thinking, and at higher doses, weaker breathing. In animal studies, Pinellia ternata lowered activity and made the animals sleep longer, which suggests it has its own sedating effect. Stack that on top of bromazepam and the worry is simply more sedation: extra grogginess, dizziness, foggy thinking, or feeling unsteady on your feet.

I want to be honest about the evidence, though. This is based on lab and animal work, not solid human studies, so it's more of a theoretical caution than a proven problem. Still, since both can make you sleepy, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, and don't stop either one on your own.

BENZODIAZEPINES

2 of 2

Bromazepam also falls under BENZODIAZEPINES.

Evidence from animal research shows that a Pinellia ternata preparation decreases activity and increases sleeping time. Theoretically, Pinellia ternata can potentiate the therapeutic effect of benzodiazepines. Some benzodiazepines include lorazepam (Ativan), alprazolam (Xanax), diazepam (Valium), midazolam (Versed), and others.

Here's the gist: bromazepam (Lectopam) is a benzodiazepine that calms the nervous system, so it can make you drowsy, relaxed, and a little uncoordinated. In animal studies, a Pinellia ternata preparation lowered activity and lengthened sleep time. The concern is that pairing the two could add up, meaning more sedation than you'd expect, like feeling extra sleepy, foggy, dizzy, or slow to react.

I want to be honest about the evidence though. This is only a theoretical concern based on animal research, not solid human studies, so it may not amount to much in real life. Still, since both can cause drowsiness, it's worth running it by your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, and avoid driving if you feel more sedated than usual.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Bromazepam page

“Bromazepam (Lectopam) is a benzodiazepine prescribed for anxiety, and because it already slows the brain, anything else with a sedative pull can tip ordinary drowsiness into something dangerous. Eight of the 99 supplement and herbal ingredients here carry a major rating, and those eight are where I would start.”

About Pinellia Ternata

What is Pinellia Ternata?

  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Cough with phlegm
  • Morning sickness (traditional use)
  • Digestive upset and bloating
  • Throat discomfort

Pinellia ternata is a tuber used in traditional Chinese medicine, most often for nausea, vomiting, and phlegmy coughs, and almost always as part of multi-herb formulas. The raw plant is toxic and must be specially processed before use, so it should only be used under qualified guidance. Solid human evidence is limited, and it should be avoided in pregnancy and breastfeeding.
