Evidence from animal research shows that a Pinellia ternata preparation decreases activity and increases sleeping time. Theoretically, Pinellia ternata can potentiate the therapeutic effect of CNS depressants. Some of these medications include antihistamines, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, tricyclic antidepressants, and others.

This combination pill carries two ingredients that calm the brain and nervous system: codeine (an opioid) and phenobarbital (a barbiturate). Both already cause drowsiness, slowed breathing, and a foggy, sluggish feeling. The concern here is that Pinellia ternata, in animal studies, made test animals less active and made them sleep longer. So in theory, layering it on top of an already sedating medicine could deepen that drowsiness.

I want to be honest about the strength of this: it is based only on animal research, not solid human studies, so it is more of a caution than a proven problem. Still, with phenobarbital and codeine on board, I would not stack anything extra that adds to sleepiness without checking first. Please run this past your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

Theoretically, Pinellia ternata can potentiate the therapeutic effect of barbiturates. Some of these sedative medications include pentobarbital (Nembutal), phenobarbital (Luminal), secobarbital (Seconal), and others.

This combination pill contains phenobarbital, a barbiturate, alongside aspirin and codeine. The concern here is the phenobarbital piece. In animal studies, a Pinellia ternata preparation made the animals less active and made them sleep longer. The worry is that, in theory, Pinellia could add to phenobarbital's calming, sedating effects.

What might that look like in real life? More drowsiness, grogginess, slowed breathing, or feeling unsteady, especially since codeine is also sedating. I want to be honest though: this is based only on lab and animal work, not solid human studies, so it's a theoretical caution, not a proven danger. Still, with sedatives I'd play it safe. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing them.

Solid human evidence is limited, and it should be avoided in pregnancy and breastfeeding.
