Tetracycline antibiotics appear to increase the gastrointestinal absorption of oral digoxin. Theoretically, concomitant use of tetracycline antibiotics might increase the absorption of the cardiac glycosides found in squill.

Here is the thinking on this pairing. Squill contains heart-acting compounds (cardiac glycosides) that behave a lot like the prescription drug digoxin. Chlortetracycline is an antibiotic, not a prodrug, so it does not get switched on by your body. Instead, the concern is about absorption. Some research suggests tetracycline antibiotics can increase how much digoxin your gut soaks up, and in theory the same could happen with squill's glycosides, leaving more of them in your system.

That matters because too much of these heart compounds can cause nausea, vision changes, and dangerous changes in heart rhythm. Keep in mind this is theoretical, based only on how the drugs behave, not on strong human studies. Still, squill is risky on its own. Please loop in your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

Squill is a bulb plant that contains potent cardiac glycosides, which can affect the heart much like the drug digoxin. While it has a long history of use as a cough remedy and heart tonic, it can be dangerously toxic and there is little solid evidence for its modern use, so we do not recommend taking it without close medical supervision.
