Squill contains cardiac glycosides. Theoretically, concomitant use with potassium-depleting diuretics can increase the risk of cardiac glycoside toxicity due to potassium depletion. Some diuretics that can deplete potassium include chlorothiazide (Diuril), chlorthalidone (Thalitone), furosemide (Lasix), hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ, Hydrodiuril, Microzide), and others.

Here's the connection between these two. Chlorthalidone is a water pill that pushes your body to flush out extra salt and water, but it also tends to lower your potassium level along the way. Squill, on the other hand, carries natural compounds called cardiac glycosides that act on the heart in much the same way the drug digoxin does.

The worry is that low potassium makes the heart more sensitive to those squill compounds, which can raise the risk of dangerous heart rhythm changes. This is a theoretical concern based on how these substances behave, not something proven in studies, but squill can be genuinely toxic, so it isn't worth gambling on. Please don't start squill while taking chlorthalidone without checking with your doctor or pharmacist first.

What Is Chlorthalidone Used For?

Brand names: Hygroton, Thalitone

Chlorthalidone is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of serious cardiovascular events, especially strokes and heart attacks. It can be used alone or combined with other blood pressure medicines.

Chlorthalidone is also used as an add-on treatment for edema (fluid buildup) caused by heart failure, liver cirrhosis, and kidney conditions including nephrotic syndrome, acute glomerulonephritis, and chronic renal failure. Thalitone is additionally indicated for edema associated with heart failure, liver cirrhosis, and renal disease including nephrotic syndrome.
