Hydrochlorothiazide falls under DIURETIC DRUGS — the group Squill interacts with.

Squill contains cardiac glycosides. Theoretically, concomitant use with potassium-depleting diuretics can increase the risk of cardiac glycoside toxicity due to potassium depletion. Some diuretics that can deplete potassium include chlorothiazide (Diuril), chlorthalidone (Thalitone), furosemide (Lasix), hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ, Hydrodiuril, Microzide), and others.

Here's the connection worth knowing about. Hydrochlorothiazide is a water pill, and one of its quiet side effects is that it can lower your body's potassium over time. Squill, on the other hand, contains natural compounds that work on the heart much like digoxin. When potassium runs low, the heart becomes more sensitive to those squill compounds, which can raise the risk of an irregular or unsafe heart rhythm.

I'll be honest with you: this concern is theoretical, based on how these two work rather than on strong studies. Still, squill is genuinely toxic and I don't recommend taking it without close medical supervision. If you're on hydrochlorothiazide and considering squill, please talk with your pharmacist or doctor first, and ask about checking your potassium.

Squill is a bulb plant that contains potent cardiac glycosides, which can affect the heart much like the drug digoxin. While it has a long history of use as a cough remedy and heart tonic, it can be dangerously toxic and there is little solid evidence for its modern use, so we do not recommend taking it without close medical supervision.

What Is Hydrochlorothiazide Used For?

Brand names: Esidrix, Hydro, Microzide, HydroDiuril, Hydro-D, Oretic, Aquazide H, Aquazide, HCTZ

Hydrochlorothiazide treats high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children, either alone or combined with other blood pressure medicines. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of strokes and heart attacks.

It also treats edema (fluid buildup) linked to congestive heart failure, hepatic cirrhosis (liver scarring), and kidney conditions including nephrotic syndrome. Hydrochlorothiazide tablets are additionally indicated for edema caused by corticosteroid or estrogen therapy, and edema from acute glomerulonephritis or chronic renal failure. Inzirqo (the oral suspension) is specifically approved for both hypertension and edema in adult and pediatric patients.
