Demeclocycline falls under TETRACYCLINE ANTIBIOTICS — the group Squill interacts with.

Tetracycline antibiotics appear to increase the gastrointestinal absorption of oral digoxin. Theoretically, concomitant use of tetracycline antibiotics might increase the absorption of the cardiac glycosides found in squill.

Here's the concern when squill meets demeclocycline. Squill carries powerful heart compounds (cardiac glycosides) that act a lot like digoxin. Some research suggests tetracycline antibiotics like demeclocycline can boost how much of these heart compounds your gut absorbs. The thinking is that the antibiotic may shift the gut bacteria that would normally break some of this down, so more ends up in your bloodstream.

If that happens, you could get too much of squill's heart effect, which can mean nausea, a slow or irregular heartbeat, dizziness, or vision changes. Keep in mind this is a theoretical, lab-based idea, not something proven in people. Still, squill itself is risky and we don't recommend it. Please loop in your pharmacist or doctor before combining these.

What is Squill?

Squill

Squill is a bulb plant that contains potent cardiac glycosides, which can affect the heart much like the drug digoxin. While it has a long history of use as a cough remedy and heart tonic, it can be dangerously toxic and there is little solid evidence for its modern use, so we do not recommend taking it without close medical supervision.

About Demeclocycline

What Is Demeclocycline Used For?

Brand name: Declomycin

Demeclocycline Hydrochloride tablets are used to treat bacterial infections caused by susceptible organisms. These include Rocky Mountain spotted fever, typhus, Q fever, tick fevers, respiratory tract infections (including those caused by Mycoplasma pneumoniae), cholera, plague, tularemia, brucellosis, relapsing fever, chancroid, and sexually transmitted infections such as lymphogranuloma venereum, nongonococcal urethritis, and gonorrhea (when penicillin cannot be used).

It is also used for certain skin and skin structure infections, bartonellosis, granuloma inguinale, actinomycosis, listeriosis, anthrax (when penicillin is contraindicated), and as an adjunct in acute intestinal amebiasis. In severe acne, it may be used as part of combination therapy. It should only be used for infections that are proven or strongly suspected to be caused by bacteria that respond to it.
