Squill contains cardiac glycosides. Theoretically, concomitant use with potassium-depleting diuretics can increase the risk of cardiac glycoside toxicity due to potassium depletion. Some diuretics that can deplete potassium include chlorothiazide (Diuril), chlorthalidone (Thalitone), furosemide (Lasix), hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ, Hydrodiuril, Microzide), and others.

Here's the concern with pairing Squill and methyclothiazide. Methyclothiazide is a thiazide water pill, and one of its known effects is to lower your body's potassium level as it flushes out extra salt and fluid. Squill, on the other hand, contains heart-acting compounds called cardiac glycosides that behave a lot like digoxin.

The worry is that low potassium makes the heart more sensitive to those glycosides, which can raise the risk of toxic effects like an irregular heartbeat, nausea, or feeling weak and dizzy. To be clear, this is a theoretical interaction based on how these substances work, not on strong human studies. Still, squill can be genuinely dangerous, so please don't combine these without talking to your doctor or pharmacist first, and have your potassium checked.

Squill is a bulb plant that contains potent cardiac glycosides, which can affect the heart much like the drug digoxin. While it has a long history of use as a cough remedy and heart tonic, it can be dangerously toxic and there is little solid evidence for its modern use, so we do not recommend taking it without close medical supervision.

What Is Methyclothiazide Used For?

Brand names: Enduron, Aquatensen

  • Methyclothiazide is used to treat high blood pressure. Methyclothiazide is also used to treat edema (fluid retention; excess fluid held in body tissues) caused by various medical problems, including heart, kidney, and liver disease and to treat edema caused by using certain medications including estrogen and corticosteroids. Methyclothiazide is in a class of medications called diuretics ('water pills'). It works by causing the kidneys to get rid of unneeded water and salt from the body into the urine.

  • High blood pressure is a common condition and when not treated, can cause damage to the brain, heart, blood vessels, kidneys and other parts of the body. Damage to these organs may cause heart disease, a heart attack, heart failure, stroke, kidney failure, loss of vision, and other problems. In addition to taking medication, making lifestyle changes will also help to control your blood pressure. These changes include eating a diet that is low in fat and salt, maintaining a healthy weight, exercising at least 30 minutes most days, not smoking, and using alcohol in moderation.
