Captopril, Hydrochlorothiazide falls under PHOTOSENSITIZING DRUGS — the group St. John's Wort interacts with.

Theoretically, St. John's wort might increase the likelihood for photosensitivity reactions when used in combination with photosensitizing drugs.
St. John's wort might increase photosensitivity reactions due to its hypericin content. However, some clinical research shows that very high doses of St. John's wort are needed to produce phototoxicity in humans.

Here's the gist of this one. Both St. John's wort (because of a compound called hypericin) and the hydrochlorothiazide part of your blood pressure pill can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight. Put them together and, in theory, you could be a little more prone to sunburn, rashes, or red, irritated skin after time outdoors. This isn't about your blood pressure control changing, it's really about your skin and the sun.

The good news: this is a theoretical concern based on how these ingredients behave, and studies suggest you'd need fairly high doses of St. John's wort to actually trigger this. Still, St. John's wort has plenty of other serious drug interactions, so please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining it. If you do go out, wearing sunscreen and a hat is a smart, easy precaution.

What Is Captopril and Hydrochlorothiazide Used For?

Brand names: Capozide, Acezide

Captopril and hydrochlorothiazide tablets are used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). The two ingredients work together to lower blood pressure more effectively than either one alone.

This combination may be started as initial therapy or substituted when a patient has already been adjusted on both ingredients separately. It is approved for patients with normal kidney function, and is used more cautiously in those with impaired kidney function.
