Sulforaphane and Ethinyl estradiol, Levonogestrel

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Sulforaphane interacts with whole categories of medication. Ethinyl estradiol, Levonogestrel falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Sulforaphane in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

Moderate

CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES

1 of 2

Why this applies to Ethinyl estradiol, Levonogestrel

Ethinyl estradiol, Levonogestrel falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Sulforaphane interacts with.

Theoretically, sulforaphane might alter the levels and clinical effects of CYP1A2 substrates.
Animal and in vitro research shows that sulforaphane inhibits CYP1A2 enzyme activity. However, its precursor glucoraphanin also appears to increase the expression of the CYP1A2 enzyme, which could lead to increased metabolism of CYP1A2 substrates. These effects have not been reported in humans.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Here's the honest picture with your birth control pill (Lybrel) and sulforaphane. The concern is that sulforaphane may bump into an enzyme called CYP1A2, which helps process the estrogen part of your pill. In lab dishes and animals, sulforaphane seemed to slow this enzyme, while its broccoli-based precursor seemed to speed it up. So the science actually points in two opposite directions, and none of this has been shown in real people.

Because the effect is so uncertain, I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Eating broccoli and other cruciferous veggies is perfectly fine. If you take a concentrated sulforaphane supplement, just mention it to your pharmacist, since reliable birth control matters and we'd rather be careful.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES

2 of 2

Ethinyl estradiol, Levonogestrel also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, sulforaphane might increase the levels and effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
Animal and in vitro research shows that sulforaphane inhibits CYP3A4 enzyme activity and downregulates its expression. This interaction has not been reported in humans.

Your birth control pill, Lybrel, contains two active hormones (ethinyl estradiol and levonorgestrel) that your liver clears partly through an enzyme called CYP3A4. In lab dishes and animal studies, sulforaphane seems to slow this enzyme down. In theory, that could let the hormones build up a little, which might mean slightly more of the usual estrogen-type effects like nausea, breast tenderness, headaches, or bloating.

Here's the reassuring part: this has never actually been seen in people, and it only comes from early lab research. Eating broccoli and other veggies is not a concern at all. If you're thinking about a concentrated sulforaphane supplement, just check with your pharmacist or doctor first so you're comfortable.

Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.

Likelihood how strong the evidence is that the interaction actually happens in people
  • LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
  • UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.

About Sulforaphane

What is Sulforaphane?

  • Antioxidant support
  • General cellular health
  • Detoxification support
  • Inflammation
  • Skin and aging concerns

Sulforaphane is a natural compound found in broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables that has shown promising antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects in lab studies, but strong human evidence for most specific health claims is still limited. It is generally well tolerated as part of a vegetable-rich diet, but if you take a concentrated supplement, talk to your pharmacist or doctor first.
