Why this applies to Budesonide

Budesonide falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Sulforaphane interacts with.

Theoretically, sulforaphane might increase the levels and effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
Animal and in vitro research shows that sulforaphane inhibits CYP3A4 enzyme activity and downregulates its expression. This interaction has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist for budesonide: your body relies on an enzyme called CYP3A4 to clear it out. Budesonide is an active steroid (not a prodrug), so anything that slows that enzyme tends to let more of the drug stick around. In lab and animal studies, sulforaphane appears to block CYP3A4. In theory, that could nudge budesonide levels up and make typical steroid side effects more likely, things like fluid retention, mood or sleep changes, higher blood sugar, or over time effects on bone.

The important part: this has only been seen in test tubes and animals, never confirmed in people. Eating broccoli is no concern. A concentrated sulforaphane supplement is where I'd pause, so just run it past your pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Budesonide Used For?

Brand names: Entocort EC, Pulmicort, Uceris, Tarpeyo, Eohilia

Budesonide inhalation suspension is used as a maintenance (long-term control) treatment for asthma in children 12 months to 8 years old. It also works as a preventive (prophylactic) therapy to reduce the frequency of asthma symptoms.

Important: This medication is not a rescue inhaler. It will not stop a sudden asthma attack. A separate fast-acting bronchodilator is needed for sudden symptoms.
