Drug & supplement interaction

Swamp Milkweed + Olaparib

Olaparib brand name: Lynparza.

No Known Interaction
The bottom line No known interaction

We found no known interaction between Swamp Milkweed and Olaparib in our sources. Absence of a documented interaction is not the same as proven safety, and does not guarantee one does not exist. Do not start, stop, or change a medication or supplement based on this page; confirm with your pharmacist or doctor first. Additionally, although there is no interaction, the two are separately associated with some of the same side effects, which would make a new symptom harder to attribute to one or the other.

Swamp Milkweed and Olaparib

We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.

No Known Interaction Found

We did not find a documented interaction between Olaparib and Swamp Milkweed in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — there is often limited research on supplements and herbal products, especially around drug interactions.

If you decide to take both, the practical routine is simple: add one new thing at a time and note the date you started it. If the combination is going to disagree with you, it usually shows in the first days to a couple of weeks — and a start date turns “I’ve been feeling off” into something a pharmacist can actually work with. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

How we checked

Why No Interaction Is Listed for Olaparib

Interactions in our licensed database are recorded against drug classes, not just single drug names. Olaparib is filed under 2 classifications — cytochrome p450 3a4 (cyp3a4) substrates, oral drugs. Swamp Milkweed has documented interactions with 7 drug classes — the most serious being digoxin (lanoxin) (major), quinine (major) and corticosteroids (moderate) — and none of Olaparib’s classifications are among them.

Classification data comes from our licensed Natural Medicines dataset. A medication can belong to classes beyond those recorded there, so this describes how the check was run — it is not a safety guarantee.

What to actually watch for

No Interaction Found — But Data Suggests Swamp Milkweed and Olaparib May Share Several of the Same Side Effects

This is not an interaction. Neither one changes how your body handles the other, and nothing here says they react together. What our sources do show is that each has separately been linked to the effects below — so taking both can make those effects more likely to turn up, and harder to pin on one or the other if they do.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Olaparib page

“Grapefruit is the first thing to drop if you take Olaparib (Lynparza). It blocks CYP3A4, the liver enzyme that clears this cancer drug, so levels can climb and side effects with them.”

About Swamp Milkweed

What is Swamp Milkweed?

  • Traditional digestive remedy
  • Diuretic (increasing urine)
  • Cough and respiratory complaints
  • Worm or parasite remedy (folk use)
  • Pollinator/garden plant rather than medicine

Swamp Milkweed is a native North American wetland plant best known today as a butterfly and pollinator garden plant, not a proven medicine. It contains toxic milky sap with cardiac glycoside-like compounds, and there is very little reliable human research to support any health use. Because of its potential toxicity, it should not be used as a supplement without professional guidance.

Asclepias incarnata · Apocynaceae · Root, and historically other parts of the plant · Dried root, tinctures, and traditional decoctions (rarely sold as a commercial supplement)

An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether Swamp Milkweed is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our Swamp Milkweed record says about it on its own.

Swamp Milkweed: dosing

There is no established safe or standardized dose for Swamp Milkweed. It is not a mainstream supplement, and reliable products with verified content are not generally available.Because of the plant's toxicity and the lack of research, we cannot recommend any specific amount. For most people, the safest approach is to enjoy Swamp Milkweed as a garden plant rather than to consume it.

About Olaparib

What Is Olaparib Used For?

Brand name: Lynparza

Lynparza (olaparib) is used to treat adults with certain ovarian, fallopian tube, or primary peritoneal cancers that carry BRCA or other DNA-repair gene mutations — both as a maintenance therapy after platinum-based chemotherapy (including in combination with bevacizumab for some patients) and for recurrent disease. It is also approved for HER2-negative breast cancer with a germline BRCA mutation, both in early high-risk disease (adjuvant setting) and in metastatic disease.

Lynparza is additionally used as maintenance therapy for adults with germline BRCA-mutated metastatic pancreatic adenocarcinoma whose disease has not progressed on first-line platinum-based chemotherapy, and for adults with certain gene-mutated metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer — either alone (after prior enzalutamide or abiraterone) or in combination with abiraterone and prednisone or prednisolone. All uses require testing for specific genetic mutations using an FDA-approved companion diagnostic before starting treatment.
