Armodafinil falls under STIMULANT LAXATIVES — the group Swamp Milkweed interacts with.

Theoretically, excessive use of stimulant laxatives with swamp milkweed might increase the risk of toxicity.
Swamp milkweed contains cardioactive steroids known as cardenolides that may have digitalis-like activity. Excessive use of stimulant laxatives can cause diarrhea, resulting in potassium depletion. This might increase the risk of toxicity.

I want to be upfront with you here. The interaction on file is really about stimulant laxatives and swamp milkweed, not armodafinil (Nuvigil). The concern is that strong laxatives can cause diarrhea, which drains potassium, and low potassium can make milkweed's heart-acting (digitalis-like) compounds more dangerous. Armodafinil is a wakefulness drug, not a laxative, so this particular mechanism doesn't really apply to it.

That said, swamp milkweed itself is genuinely toxic and isn't a proven supplement, so I'd steer clear of it regardless. If you ever feel a pounding or irregular heartbeat, nausea, or unusual jitteriness, treat that seriously. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining anything with your armodafinil.

What Is Armodafinil Used For?

Brand name: Nuvigil

Armodafinil tablets (including the brand Nuvigil) are used to improve wakefulness in adults who have excessive sleepiness linked to one of three conditions: obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), narcolepsy, or shift work disorder (SWD).

In obstructive sleep apnea, armodafinil treats the sleepiness itself — not the underlying airway obstruction. If CPAP (a breathing device worn during sleep) is the right treatment for you, your doctor should try that first before adding armodafinil for sleepiness.
