Swamp milkweed contains cardioactive steroids known as cardenolides that may have digitalis-like activity. Potassium depletion can increase the risk of cardenolide toxicity.

Here's the gist for Mannitol: it's an osmotic diuretic, meaning it pulls extra water (and some electrolytes, including potassium) out through your kidneys. Swamp Milkweed contains heart-active compounds called cardenolides that behave a bit like digitalis drugs. When your potassium runs low, those heart compounds can hit harder and become more toxic.

So the worry isn't that mannitol changes how the milkweed is processed. It's that mannitol can lower your potassium, and low potassium makes any digitalis-like effect more dangerous, raising the chance of irregular heartbeats. To be honest, this is a theoretical concern based on how these substances work, not proven cases. Still, Swamp Milkweed isn't a safe supplement to take. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor first.
