Swamp Milkweed and Ammonium Chloride

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

DIURETIC DRUGS

Why this applies to Ammonium Chloride

Ammonium Chloride falls under DIURETIC DRUGS — the group Swamp Milkweed interacts with.

Theoretically, potassium depleting diuretics might increase the risk of toxicity with swamp milkweed.
Swamp milkweed contains cardioactive steroids known as cardenolides that may have digitalis-like activity. Potassium depletion can increase the risk of cardenolide toxicity.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing to understand with Swamp Milkweed: it carries natural heart-acting compounds called cardenolides, which behave a bit like the old heart drug digitalis. When your body runs low on potassium, those compounds become more likely to cause trouble, things like an irregular or slowed heartbeat, nausea, or feeling weak or dizzy.

Now, Ammonium Chloride isn't a typical water pill, but it can be grouped with diuretics and may nudge potassium and your body's acid balance. If potassium drops, the milkweed's effect on the heart could be amplified. I want to be straight with you: this is a theoretical concern based on how these compounds work, not on solid human studies. Still, I'd skip using Swamp Milkweed as a supplement and check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Ammonium Chloride page

“Ammonium chloride, an old drug still used to acidify the urine and correct certain acid-base imbalances, sits in caution territory in my read of this page. Most of the interactions on file involve supplements that push blood pressure up or down or that compound the fluid and potassium shifts tied to its use, and a smaller set can chang…”

About Swamp Milkweed

What is Swamp Milkweed?

  • Traditional digestive remedy
  • Diuretic (increasing urine)
  • Cough and respiratory complaints
  • Worm or parasite remedy (folk use)
  • Pollinator/garden plant rather than medicine

Swamp Milkweed is a native North American wetland plant best known today as a butterfly and pollinator garden plant, not a proven medicine. It contains toxic milky sap with cardiac glycoside-like compounds, and there is very little reliable human research to support any health use. Because of its potential toxicity, it should not be used as a supplement without professional guidance.
