Nusinersen Sodium falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Sweet Clover interacts with.

Theoretically, fresh sweet clover might increase the risk of bleeding when used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
Fresh sweet clover contains coumarinic acids, which are converted to free coumarins during drying. Dicoumarol, which has anticoagulant activity, also has been found in some sweet clover preparations and can be formed if fresh sweet clover is allowed to spoil.

Here's something worth knowing about Spinraza (nusinersen) and sweet clover. Sweet clover can contain coumarin-related compounds, and if the plant spoils it may form dicoumarol, which thins the blood. That's why our database flags a possible bleeding risk when it's paired with blood thinners. The catch is that this warning was built around the whole anticoagulant/antiplatelet group, and nusinersen isn't actually a blood thinner itself.

The real concern is more practical: Spinraza is given by a needle into the spinal fluid (a lumbar puncture), and anything that raises your bleeding tendency could matter around that procedure. This worry is theoretical, based on chemistry rather than solid human studies. Still, please tell your care team you're using sweet clover before any injection so they can weigh in.

Brand name: Spinraza

Spinraza (nusinersen) is used to treat spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) — a genetic disease that causes progressive muscle weakness by reducing the body's ability to make a protein called SMN (survival motor neuron). Spinraza is approved for pediatric and adult patients with SMA.

Spinraza is given by intrathecal injection — directly into the fluid surrounding the spinal cord — so the medicine can reach the central nervous system where it's needed most.
