Thuja and Oxazepam

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTICONVULSANTS

Why this applies to Oxazepam

Oxazepam falls under ANTICONVULSANTS — the group Thuja interacts with.

Thuja products can contain thujone, which might lower the seizure threshold. Theoretically, this could decrease the effectiveness of anticonvulsants drugs.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist with Thuja and your oxazepam. Concentrated Thuja products can contain thujone, a compound that may make the brain a little more prone to seizures. Oxazepam (Serax) calms brain activity, so in theory thujone could work against that calming effect and slightly weaken how well your medicine controls anxiety or, more importantly, the seizures and tremors that can show up during alcohol withdrawal.

I want to be straight with you: this is based on weak, anecdotal evidence and the idea that the two pull in opposite directions, not on strong studies. Tiny culinary touches are unlikely to matter, but concentrated Thuja oil or supplements are a different story. Please run it by your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Oxazepam page

“The single biggest hazard with oxazepam (Serax), a benzodiazepine prescribed for anxiety and alcohol withdrawal, is stacked sedation, and this is a list to treat with genuine respect. Nearly two thirds of the supplements and foods on this page add their own drowsiness on top of the drug's, and the worst of them can depress breathing it…”

About Thuja

What is Thuja?

  • Warts and skin growths
  • Respiratory and immune support
  • Cold and upper respiratory symptoms
  • Topical skin conditions
  • Traditional use as a diuretic or to bring on menstruation

Thuja, also called northern white cedar or arborvitae, is a tree whose leaf and oil have a long history in folk and homeopathic medicine, especially for warts and immune support. Solid human evidence for these uses is very limited, and the undiluted oil contains thujone, which can be toxic. Talk with a pharmacist or doctor before using it, and avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
