Eletriptan falls under Oral Drugs — the group Thyroid Extract interacts with.

Food and medications can interfere with thyroid hormone absorption. Some foods, particularly those high in fiber or containing certain minerals like calcium or iron, can bind to thyroid hormones and reduce their absorption in the digestive tract. Additionally, taking thyroid medications with certain drugs, like antacids or calcium supplements, can hinder the effectiveness of the thyroid medication, necessitating adjustments in dosage or timing. Prescription thyroid medications, such as Synthroid, are recommended to be taken on an empty stomach, at least 30 minutes before food and other medications, for optimal absorption.

Here the concern runs the other direction from what you might expect. It is not that your migraine medicine, eletriptan (Relpax), changes the supplement. Instead, taking thyroid extract alongside other oral pills can affect how well the thyroid hormone itself gets absorbed. Thyroid hormone is finicky and likes an empty stomach, so swallowing it at the same time as eletriptan (or food, antacids, calcium, or iron) may blunt how much thyroid hormone your body takes in.

The good news is this is rated a minor, easily managed issue. Eletriptan is taken only when a migraine strikes, so simply separating the two by a few hours usually solves it. Eletriptan does not turn off or supercharge the thyroid product. Still, since over-the-counter thyroid extract is unpredictable, please loop in your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

What Is Eletriptan Used For?

Brand name: Relpax

Eletriptan tablets — sold as Relpax, Eletriptan HBR, and Eletriptan Hydrobromide — are taken at the onset of a migraine to relieve the headache and associated symptoms. They are meant to treat an attack that is already happening, not to prevent future migraines.

Eletriptan is only appropriate when a clear migraine diagnosis has been confirmed by a healthcare provider. It is not approved for cluster headaches, and its use in those cases has not been studied.
