Garcinia and Eletriptan

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

SEROTONERGIC DRUGS

Why this applies to Eletriptan

Eletriptan falls under SEROTONERGIC DRUGS — the group Garcinia interacts with.

Theoretically, combining garcinia with other serotonergic drugs might increase the risk of serotonergic side effects, including serotonin syndrome.
In one report, a patient experienced serotonin syndrome after taking garcinia extract (60% hydroxycitric acid) 1000 mg daily in combination with escitalopram 20 mg, which had been taken for a year. The patient was switched to sertraline 50 mg daily and again experienced serotonin syndrome.

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist: eletriptan is a triptan that nudges serotonin activity in the brain to stop a migraine. Garcinia, through its hydroxycitric acid, has been loosely linked to raising serotonin signaling too. Stack the two and, in theory, you could get more serotonin effect than your body wants.

When that happens it's called serotonin syndrome, which can look like agitation, a racing heart, sweating, shivering, muscle twitching, or feeling confused. I want to be honest with you though: this concern rests on weak, anecdotal evidence, and the one report we have involved an antidepressant, not a triptan. The risk with occasional eletriptan use is likely low. Still, if you want to try Garcinia, run it by your pharmacist or doctor first and watch for those warning signs.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Eletriptan page

“Eletriptan (Relpax) treats migraines by acting on serotonin receptors, which is exactly why I want you to slow down with this list. Twenty of the 38 ingredients here also raise serotonin, and stacking them on a triptan risks serotonin syndrome, where too much serotonin brings agitation, sweating, and a racing heart.”

Garcinia is a tropical fruit whose rind contains hydroxycitric acid (HCA), widely marketed for weight loss and appetite control.
