Garcinia and Fluoxetine

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

SEROTONERGIC DRUGS

Why this applies to Fluoxetine

Fluoxetine falls under SEROTONERGIC DRUGS — the group Garcinia interacts with.

Theoretically, combining garcinia with other serotonergic drugs might increase the risk of serotonergic side effects, including serotonin syndrome.
In one report, a patient experienced serotonin syndrome after taking garcinia extract (60% hydroxycitric acid) 1000 mg daily in combination with escitalopram 20 mg, which had been taken for a year. The patient was switched to sertraline 50 mg daily and again experienced serotonin syndrome.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the concern with pairing Garcinia and fluoxetine (Prozac). Fluoxetine raises serotonin levels in your brain to help with depression, OCD, and panic. There's a theory that Garcinia may also nudge serotonin upward. Stack the two together and you could, in rare cases, push serotonin too high.

I'll be honest with you though: this is weak, anecdotal evidence. There's basically one report of someone developing serotonin syndrome while combining a Garcinia extract with a similar antidepressant. Signs to watch for would be agitation, a racing heart, sweating, shivering, muscle twitching, or feeling confused. If those show up, get medical help. Before adding Garcinia, please check with your pharmacist or doctor first, since the weight-loss benefit is small and uncertain anyway.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Fluoxetine page

“Grapefruit is the surprise at the top of fluoxetine's (Prozac) supplement list. In large amounts it can stretch the QT interval, the electrical pause between heartbeats, and fluoxetine, a widely prescribed antidepressant, can do the same, raising the odds of a dangerous rhythm.”
