Rizatriptan Benzoate falls under SEROTONERGIC DRUGS — the group Garcinia interacts with.

Theoretically, combining garcinia with other serotonergic drugs might increase the risk of serotonergic side effects, including serotonin syndrome.
In one report, a patient experienced serotonin syndrome after taking garcinia extract (60% hydroxycitric acid) 1000 mg daily in combination with escitalopram 20 mg, which had been taken for a year. The patient was switched to sertraline 50 mg daily and again experienced serotonin syndrome.

Here's the concern with pairing Garcinia and your migraine medicine, Maxalt (rizatriptan). Rizatriptan works on serotonin pathways in the brain to stop a migraine. Garcinia has been linked, in a small number of reports, to raising serotonin activity too. Stacking two things that nudge serotonin upward could, in theory, raise your risk of serotonin syndrome. Warning signs to know are agitation, a racing heart, shivering or muscle twitching, sweating, fever, and feeling confused.

I want to be straight with you: this is mostly theoretical, based on a single case report involving a different drug (an antidepressant), not rizatriptan. So the real-world risk is likely low. Still, since both touch serotonin, please run this combination by your pharmacist or doctor before using Garcinia.

What Is Rizatriptan Used For?

Brand names: Maxalt-MLT, Maxalt

Rizatriptan treats migraine headaches — with or without aura — when they occur. It is approved for adults and for children and teens ages 6 to 17. It is available as a regular tablet (Maxalt, Rizatriptan, Rizatriptan Benzoate), an orally disintegrating tablet (Maxalt, Maxalt-MLT, Rizatriptan Benzoate ODT), and a dissolving oral film placed on the tongue (Rizafilm).

Rizatriptan is for stopping a migraine once it starts — it is not meant to prevent migraines from happening, and it is not approved for cluster headaches. It should only be used after a doctor has confirmed a migraine diagnosis.
