Garcinia and Insulin Glulisine (rDNA)

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIDIABETES DRUGS

Why this applies to Insulin Glulisine (rDNA)

Insulin Glulisine (rDNA) falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Garcinia interacts with.

Theoretically, hydroxycitric acid (HCA), the main active ingredient in garcinia, might have additive effects with antidiabetes drugs and increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
HCA reduces fasting and postprandial blood glucose levels in animal models, theoretically by delaying glucose absorption. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Apidra (insulin glulisine) is a fast-acting insulin that lowers your blood sugar after meals. The concern here is that Garcinia's main compound, hydroxycitric acid, might also nudge blood sugar downward. Put together, the worry is that they could add up and push your sugar too low, which is called hypoglycemia.

I want to be honest about the evidence though: this is theoretical. The blood-sugar effect of Garcinia has only shown up in animal studies, not in people. Still, since you're already on insulin, it's smart to play it safe. Watch for low-sugar warning signs like shakiness, sweating, dizziness, a racing heart, or confusion. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding Garcinia, and don't change your insulin on your own.
