Some foods, particularly those high in fiber or containing certain minerals like calcium or iron, can bind to thyroid hormones and reduce their absorption in the digestive tract. Additionally, taking thyroid medications with certain drugs, like antacids or calcium supplements, can hinder the effectiveness of the thyroid medication, necessitating adjustments in dosage or timing. Prescription thyroid medications, such as Synthroid, are recommended to be taken on an empty stomach, at least 30 minutes before food and other medications, for optimal absorption.

Here is the thing to know about Vimovo (the esomeprazole plus naproxen combo): the esomeprazole part lowers your stomach acid. Your gut actually needs some of that acid to absorb thyroid hormone well, so taking acid-lowering medicine alongside your thyroid extract can mean your body soaks up a bit less of the thyroid hormone. The likely result is your thyroid treatment working a little less reliably, which can let tiredness, feeling cold, or sluggishness creep back.

This is considered a minor, manageable issue. The simplest fix is usually timing and consistency, not stopping anything. Since over-the-counter thyroid extract is not standardized to begin with, please loop in your doctor or pharmacist so they can check your thyroid levels and help you space the doses correctly.
