Thyroid Extract and Finasteride, Tadalafil

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Minor

Oral Drugs

Why this applies to Finasteride, Tadalafil

Finasteride, Tadalafil falls under Oral Drugs — the group Thyroid Extract interacts with.

Food and medications can interfere with thyroid hormone absorption. Some foods, particularly those high in fiber or containing certain minerals like calcium or iron, can bind to thyroid hormones and reduce their absorption in the digestive tract. Additionally, taking thyroid medications with certain drugs, like antacids or calcium supplements, can hinder the effectiveness of the thyroid medication, necessitating adjustments in dosage or timing. Prescription thyroid medications, such as Synthroid, are recommended to be taken on an empty stomach, at least 30 minutes before food and other medications, for optimal absorption.
Severity Minor Likelihood Likely Evidence A

Well-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist for your Entadfi (the finasteride plus tadalafil combo used for an enlarged prostate). The interaction on file is really about the thyroid extract side of things, not your prostate pill. Thyroid hormone is fussy about absorption, and taking it too close to other tablets or food can blunt how much your body soaks up, which can leave a thyroid problem under-treated.

The good news: this is rated minor and is easy to manage with timing. Thyroid extract is best taken on an empty stomach, usually first thing in the morning, while your finasteride/tadalafil can comfortably be spaced a few hours apart. I don't expect this to change your prostate or urinary results. To be safe with the unpredictable strength of OTC thyroid products, please run your full list by your pharmacist or doctor.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Finasteride, Tadalafil page

“Entadfi combines finasteride and tadalafil for an enlarged prostate, and because tadalafil relaxes blood vessels and both drugs are cleared by the liver enzyme CYP3A4, this is a supplement list I would read carefully rather than skim. Most of the interactions here change how fast the body breaks the medicine down.”

About Thyroid Extract

What is Thyroid Extract?

Thyroid Extract
  • Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid)
  • Fatigue and low energy
  • Weight management
  • Sluggish metabolism
  • General thyroid support

Thyroid extract supplements are made from dried animal thyroid gland and may contain real thyroid hormones (T3 and T4), but the amounts in over-the-counter products are not standardized and can be unpredictable. Self-treating a thyroid problem with these supplements can be risky, so always work with a doctor or pharmacist and use prescription thyroid medicine when treatment is needed.
