Oral Drugs
Why this applies to Risedronate Sodium
Risedronate Sodium falls under Oral Drugs — the group Thyroid Extract interacts with.
Well-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
Here's the thing to know when you take risedronate (Actonel) alongside a thyroid extract supplement: it's really a timing issue, not a dangerous reaction. Both of these medicines are picky about how they're absorbed. Risedronate already has to be taken first thing in the morning on an empty stomach with plain water, sitting upright, and you wait at least 30 minutes before eating or taking anything else. Thyroid extract has the very same demand for an empty stomach.
If you take them at the same moment, they can blunt each other's absorption, meaning your bones may get less benefit and your thyroid support may fall short. The fix is simple: space them apart. Ask your pharmacist to help you map out the timing so each one works as intended.
What These Ratings Mean
Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.
Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.
Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.
Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.

About Thyroid Extract
What is Thyroid Extract?
- Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid)
- Fatigue and low energy
- Weight management
- Sluggish metabolism
- General thyroid support
Thyroid extract supplements are made from dried animal thyroid gland and may contain real thyroid hormones (T3 and T4), but the amounts in over-the-counter products are not standardized and can be unpredictable. Self-treating a thyroid problem with these supplements can be risky, so always work with a doctor or pharmacist and use prescription thyroid medicine when treatment is needed.

Risedronate sodium delayed-release tablets (including Atelvia) are labeled only for treating postmenopausal osteoporosis.
