Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
BISPHOSPHONATES
Why this applies to Risedronate Sodium
Risedronate Sodium falls under BISPHOSPHONATES — the group Magnesium interacts with.
Cations, including magnesium, can decrease bisphosphonate absorption. Advise patients to separate doses of magnesium and these drugs by at least 2 hours.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here's the simple version: magnesium can keep your risedronate from being absorbed properly. Risedronate is already a tricky pill to absorb, your gut only soaks up a tiny amount even on a good day. Magnesium is a mineral (a cation) that can bind to risedronate in your stomach and block what little gets through. The result is less drug reaching your bones, which means weaker protection against fractures and thinning bones.
The good news is this is easy to manage by timing. Risedronate is usually taken first thing in the morning on an empty stomach with plain water, then you wait before eating or taking anything else. Keep your magnesium and risedronate at least 2 hours apart so they don't meet up. Check with your pharmacist about the best schedule for your specific routine.
