Magnesium can form insoluble complexes with quinolones and decrease their absorption. Advise patients to take these drugs at least 2 hours before, or 4 to 6 hours after, magnesium supplements.

Here's the simple version: if you swallow your magnesium and your gatifloxacin too close together, the magnesium can grab onto the antibiotic in your gut and form a clump your body can't absorb well. The result is that less of the antibiotic actually gets into your bloodstream, which means it may not fight your infection as well as it should.

The good news is this is easy to work around. Just space them out: take your gatifloxacin at least 2 hours before, or 4 to 6 hours after, your magnesium. This isn't about magnesium being dangerous here, it's about timing so the antibiotic can do its job. Antacids, multivitamins, and some dairy can do the same thing, so keep those spaced too. Check with your pharmacist if you're unsure how to line up your doses.
