Magnesium + Warfarin Sodium
Warfarin Sodium brand names: Coumadin, Panwarfin, Sofarin.
Magnesium has a minor interaction with Warfarin Sodium. Theoretically, magnesium may have antiplatelet effects, but the evidence is conflicting.

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS
Why this applies to Warfarin Sodium
Warfarin Sodium falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Magnesium interacts with.
In vitro evidence shows that magnesium sulfate inhibits platelet aggregation, even at low concentrations. Some preliminary clinical evidence shows that infusion of magnesium sulfate increases bleeding time by 48% and reduces platelet activity. However, other clinical research shows that magnesium does not affect platelet aggregation, although inhibition of platelet-dependent thrombosis can occur.
Interaction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans..
Here's the good news if you're taking warfarin and also use a magnesium supplement: this is a very minor concern. Warfarin already thins your blood by lowering your clotting factors, and magnesium doesn't change how your body breaks down warfarin at all. So your INR shouldn't swing because of magnesium.
The only theoretical wrinkle is that some lab and early studies suggest magnesium might slightly reduce platelet activity, which could, in theory, add a tiny bit to bleeding tendency. But the research is conflicting, and most studies show no real effect at normal supplement doses. I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Just stay alert for unusual bruising, nosebleeds, or bleeding gums, and check with your pharmacist or doctor before starting anything new.

About Magnesium
What is Magnesium?
- Preventing or treating magnesium deficiency
- Constipation
- Muscle cramps
- Sleep support
- Anxiety and stress
- Migraine prevention
Magnesium is an essential mineral your body needs for muscles, nerves, blood pressure, and many other functions, and supplements are useful for preventing or correcting deficiency. Some other uses, like easing constipation or preventing migraines, have reasonable support, while uses for sleep and anxiety are less proven. It is generally safe for most healthy people at recommended amounts, but talk to your pharmacist or doctor before starting, especially if you have kidney problems.
About Warfarin
What Is Warfarin Used For?
Brand names: Coumadin, Panwarfin, Sofarin
Warfarin helps prevent and treat harmful blood clots. The label lists these uses for both Warfarin Sodium tablets and Jantoven tablets:
- Preventing and treating venous thrombosis (clots in the veins) and pulmonary embolism (clots in the lungs).
- Preventing and treating clot-related complications of atrial fibrillation and/or heart valve replacement.
- Lowering the risk of death, another heart attack, and clot-related events such as stroke after a heart attack.
Warfarin does not dissolve a clot that has already formed. It helps stop the clot from growing and prevents further clot-related complications.
