Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
QUINOLONE ANTIBIOTICS
Why this applies to Cinoxacin
Cinoxacin falls under QUINOLONE ANTIBIOTICS — the group Magnesium interacts with.
Magnesium can form insoluble complexes with quinolones and decrease their absorption. Advise patients to take these drugs at least 2 hours before, or 4 to 6 hours after, magnesium supplements.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here's the simple version: if you take magnesium too close to your dose of Cinoxacin (Cinobac), the two can bind together in your stomach and form a clump your body can't absorb well. That means less of the antibiotic actually gets into your bloodstream, so it may not knock out your urinary tract infection the way it should. Cinoxacin works directly as an antibiotic (it isn't a prodrug that needs activating), so weaker absorption simply means a weaker effect and a higher chance the infection lingers.
The good news is this is easy to manage by spacing them out. A common tip is to take Cinoxacin at least 2 hours before, or 4 to 6 hours after, your magnesium. This is based on how the drug behaves chemically, so check the exact timing with your pharmacist or doctor.
