Some foods, particularly those high in fiber or containing certain minerals like calcium or iron, can bind to thyroid hormones and reduce their absorption in the digestive tract. Additionally, taking thyroid medications with certain drugs, like antacids or calcium supplements, can hinder the effectiveness of the thyroid medication, necessitating adjustments in dosage or timing. Prescription thyroid medications, such as Synthroid, are recommended to be taken on an empty stomach, at least 30 minutes before food and other medications, for optimal absorption.

Here the concern runs in one direction: your thyroid extract is the sensitive one, not the Zileuton. Thyroid hormone (T4 and T3) is best absorbed on an empty stomach, and taking other oral pills too close to it can bind it up or interfere, so you may absorb less. That can leave you feeling sluggish, cold, tired, or notice your thyroid numbers drifting off.

The simple fix is timing. Separating your thyroid product from Zileuton by a few hours usually keeps them out of each other's way. This is a minor, well-recognized absorption issue, not a dangerous reaction. Since over-the-counter thyroid extract is unpredictable to begin with, please loop in your doctor or pharmacist on the best plan.

About Zileuton

What Is Zileuton Used For?

Brand names: Zyflo, Zyflo CR

Zileuton is used for the ongoing prevention and treatment of asthma in adults and adolescents aged 12 and older. It is a maintenance medicine — meaning it is taken regularly to keep asthma under control, not to stop an asthma attack once it has started.

Zyflo (the tablet form) and zileuton extended-release tablets are both approved for this same purpose. Neither form should be used to treat a sudden asthma attack. However, both can be continued during a flare-up of asthma while you also use your rescue inhaler.
