Brussels Sprout and Zileuton

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES

Why this applies to Zileuton

Zileuton falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Brussels Sprout interacts with.

Animal research suggests that Brussels sprout can induce cytochrome P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) activity. Theoretically, Brussels sprout might increase the clearance and decrease the effects of drugs metabolized by CYP1A2. Some drugs metabolized by CYP1A2 include clozapine (Clozaril), cyclobenzaprine (Flexeril), fluvoxamine (Luvox), haloperidol (Haldol), imipramine (Tofranil), mexiletine (Mexitil), olanzapine (Zyprexa), pentazocine (Talwin), propranolol (Inderal), tacrine (Cognex), theophylline, zileuton (Zyflo), zolmitriptan (Zomig), and others.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist for Zileuton (Zyflo): your body uses an enzyme called CYP1A2 to break this medicine down. Animal and lab studies hint that Brussels sprouts may speed that enzyme up a bit. If that happened in people, your system could clear zileuton a little faster, which in theory might make it less effective at keeping your asthma calm. That could show up as more wheezing, coughing, chest tightness, or shortness of breath over time.

The honest part: this is theoretical and only based on early studies, not human data. Normal food amounts of Brussels sprouts are very unlikely to throw off your asthma control. I wouldn't avoid this healthy veggie, but if you notice your breathing getting worse, check in with your pharmacist or doctor.

About Brussels Sprout

What is Brussels Sprout?

  • General nutrition and fiber
  • Antioxidant support
  • Digestive health
  • Heart health support
  • Cancer-prevention interest

Brussels sprouts are a nutritious cruciferous vegetable rich in fiber, vitamin C, vitamin K, and plant compounds called glucosinolates. Eating them as part of a balanced diet is healthy and safe for most people, but supplement-style claims (like preventing cancer) are not well proven. If you take blood thinners or have thyroid concerns, talk with your pharmacist or doctor about your intake.

About Zileuton

What Is Zileuton Used For?

Brand names: Zyflo, Zyflo CR

Zileuton is used for the ongoing prevention and treatment of asthma in adults and adolescents aged 12 and older. It is a maintenance medicine — meaning it is taken regularly to keep asthma under control, not to stop an asthma attack once it has started.

Zyflo (the tablet form) and zileuton extended-release tablets are both approved for this same purpose. Neither form should be used to treat a sudden asthma attack. However, both can be continued during a flare-up of asthma while you also use your rescue inhaler.
