Bendamustine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Brussels Sprout interacts with.

Animal research suggests that Brussels sprout can induce cytochrome P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) activity. Theoretically, Brussels sprout might increase the clearance and decrease the effects of drugs metabolized by CYP1A2. Some drugs metabolized by CYP1A2 include clozapine (Clozaril), cyclobenzaprine (Flexeril), fluvoxamine (Luvox), haloperidol (Haldol), imipramine (Tofranil), mexiletine (Mexitil), olanzapine (Zyprexa), pentazocine (Talwin), propranolol (Inderal), tacrine (Cognex), theophylline, zileuton (Zyflo), zolmitriptan (Zomig), and others.

Here's the gist for bendamustine: your body partly clears it using a liver enzyme called CYP1A2. Compounds in Brussels sprouts may gently speed that enzyme up. In theory, a faster enzyme could move bendamustine out of your system a little quicker, which might slightly lower how much cancer-fighting activity it delivers.

I want to be honest about how soft this is. This warning comes only from lab and animal studies, not from people, so it's theoretical. On top of that, bendamustine is given as an infusion in a cancer clinic under close supervision, where your team monitors your response. Normal food amounts of Brussels sprouts are very unlikely to throw off your treatment. Still, since this is serious chemo, mention any heavy supplement use to your oncology team before your next dose.

What Is Bendamustine Injection Used For?

Brand names: Treanda, Belrapzo, Vivimusta

Bendamustine hydrochloride injection is used to treat adults with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). It is also used for adults with indolent B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) — a slow-growing type of blood cancer — when the disease has continued to progress during or within six months of treatment with rituximab or a rituximab-containing regimen.

For CLL, how well bendamustine works compared to other first-line treatments (aside from chlorambucil) has not been fully established.
