Clopidogrel falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Brussels Sprout interacts with.

Animal research suggests that Brussels sprout can induce cytochrome P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) activity. Theoretically, Brussels sprout might increase the clearance and decrease the effects of drugs metabolized by CYP1A2. Some drugs metabolized by CYP1A2 include clozapine (Clozaril), cyclobenzaprine (Flexeril), fluvoxamine (Luvox), haloperidol (Haldol), imipramine (Tofranil), mexiletine (Mexitil), olanzapine (Zyprexa), pentazocine (Talwin), propranolol (Inderal), tacrine (Cognex), theophylline, zileuton (Zyflo), zolmitriptan (Zomig), and others.

Here's the honest picture: the interaction we have on file is mostly theoretical, coming from lab and animal work. It suggests Brussels sprouts may speed up an enzyme called CYP1A2. The thing is, clopidogrel doesn't really rely on CYP1A2 to do its job. Plavix is a prodrug, meaning your body has to switch it on, and the main enzyme that activates it is CYP2C19, not CYP1A2. So this particular pathway isn't a great match for how clopidogrel actually works.

Bottom line: eating Brussels sprouts as food is very unlikely to weaken your Plavix or change how well it protects your heart. I wouldn't lose sleep over a side dish. If you're using concentrated cruciferous supplements, just mention it to your pharmacist so they can double-check.

What Is Clopidogrel Used For?

Brand name: Plavix

Clopidogrel tablets are used to reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke in people with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) — including unstable angina and non-ST-elevation or ST-elevation heart attacks — and in people with a history of recent heart attack, recent stroke, or established peripheral arterial disease. For ACS, it is typically given alongside aspirin.

It works by preventing platelets (blood cells that trigger clotting) from clumping together, which helps keep arteries open and lowers the chance of a dangerous clot forming.
