Riluzole falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Brussels Sprout interacts with.

Animal research suggests that Brussels sprout can induce cytochrome P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) activity. Theoretically, Brussels sprout might increase the clearance and decrease the effects of drugs metabolized by CYP1A2. Some drugs metabolized by CYP1A2 include clozapine (Clozaril), cyclobenzaprine (Flexeril), fluvoxamine (Luvox), haloperidol (Haldol), imipramine (Tofranil), mexiletine (Mexitil), olanzapine (Zyprexa), pentazocine (Talwin), propranolol (Inderal), tacrine (Cognex), theophylline, zileuton (Zyflo), zolmitriptan (Zomig), and others.

Your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP1A2 to break down riluzole. Brussels sprouts contain natural compounds that, in lab and animal studies, seem to speed up that enzyme. If that effect carried over to people, your body might clear riluzole a little faster, which could slightly lower its levels and possibly trim back how well it works for your ALS.

Here's the reassuring part: this is only a theoretical concern based on animal data, not real patient cases, and normal food amounts of Brussels sprouts are very unlikely to cause trouble. Riluzole isn't a prodrug, so it doesn't flip the other way. Enjoy them as part of a healthy diet, but if you eat large amounts regularly or take concentrated supplements, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor.

What Is Riluzole Used For?

Brand names: Rilutek, Tiglutik, Exservan

Riluzole is approved to treat amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) — the progressive neurological disease also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. This indication is shared across all available riluzole products, including tablets (Rilutek, riluzole), the dissolving oral film (Exservan), and the oral suspension (Tiglutik).

Tiglutik oral suspension is notable in that it can also be given through a PEG-tube (percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy tube) for patients who have difficulty swallowing.
