A cabbage and Brussels sprout-containing diet seems to boost elimination through glucuronide conjugation. Theoretically, these foods might also lower levels of other drugs that are metabolized through glucuronide conjugation, including acetaminophen (Tylenol, others) and oxazepam (Serax), haloperidol (Haldol), lamotrigine (Lamictal), morphine (MS Contin, Roxanol), zidovudine (AZT, Retrovir), and others.

Here's the gist for Welireg (belzutifan). Your body partly clears this medicine through a process called glucuronidation, basically attaching a sugar-like tag so the drug can be removed. Eating a lot of Brussels sprouts (and cabbage) may speed that cleanup pathway up. In theory, that could nudge belzutifan levels a bit lower, which for a cancer therapy is the part worth paying attention to since you want steady, effective levels working against your tumors.

I want to be honest about the evidence here: this is mostly theoretical and based on limited human data, not a study done with belzutifan itself. Normal dinner portions of Brussels sprouts are very unlikely to cause a problem. Just keep your intake fairly consistent rather than suddenly eating huge amounts, and check with your oncologist or pharmacist before starting any concentrated cruciferous supplement.

About Belzutifan

What Is Belzutifan Used For?

Brand name: Welireg

Welireg (belzutifan) is approved for several serious conditions. In adults with von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) disease, it treats associated kidney cancer (renal cell carcinoma), brain and spine tumors called CNS hemangioblastomas, and pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors — when surgery is not immediately needed.

Welireg also treats adults with clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC): as an adjuvant treatment (after surgery to remove the kidney) in combination with pembrolizumab or pembrolizumab and berahyaluronidase alfa-pmph to reduce the risk of recurrence, and as a single agent for advanced ccRCC after certain prior therapies have been tried. Additionally, Welireg treats adults and patients aged 12 and older with locally advanced, unresectable, or metastatic pheochromocytoma or paraganglioma (PPGL) — rare tumors of the adrenal glands or nearby nerve tissue.
