Tinospora Cordifolia and Esomeprazole Strontium

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

CYTOCHROME P450 2C19 (CYP2C19) SUBSTRATES

Why this applies to Esomeprazole Strontium

Esomeprazole Strontium falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C19 (CYP2C19) SUBSTRATES — the group Tinospora Cordifolia interacts with.

Theoretically, Tinospora cordifolia might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2C19.
In vitro research shows that Tinospora cordifolia extract inhibits CYP2C19 at high concentrations. However, this interaction has not been reported in humans.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist for esomeprazole, which is a proton pump inhibitor you take to calm stomach acid for things like reflux and heartburn. Your liver partly clears it using an enzyme called CYP2C19. In lab dish studies, Tinospora cordifolia (Giloy) appears to slow that same enzyme down, at least at high concentrations. If that happened in your body, more esomeprazole could linger, which might mean a slightly stronger effect or a few more side effects like headache, nausea, or loose stools.

I want to be honest though: this is only test-tube evidence and hasn't actually been seen in people, so it's more theoretical than proven. There's also a separate concern that Giloy itself has been linked to liver injury. Please run it by your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.
