Tree Of Heaven and Aspirin, Oxycodone

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS

Why this applies to Aspirin, Oxycodone

Aspirin, Oxycodone falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Tree Of Heaven interacts with.

Theoretically, tree of heaven extract might reduce platelet aggregation and increase the risk of bleeding if used with antiplatelet or anticoagulant drugs. In vitro evidence shows that tree of heaven crude extract attenuates epinephrine and adenosine diphosphate-induced platelet aggregation. This interaction has not been seen in humans. Until more is known, use with caution in patients taking anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

The combo pill Percodan pairs aspirin with oxycodone. The piece that matters here is the aspirin part. Aspirin already thins your blood a bit by making platelets (the cells that form clots) less sticky. Tree of Heaven, in lab dish studies, seems to do something similar and may make platelets clump less easily. Stack the two and, in theory, you could bruise more easily or bleed a little longer from cuts, with the small chance of stomach bleeding aspirin can cause.

I want to be honest: this is theoretical and based only on test-tube work, never shown in real people. So don't panic. Still, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before adding this supplement, just to play it safe.

Tree of Heaven (Ailanthus altissima) is a fast-growing, invasive tree whose bark has been used in traditional medicine, mostly for digestive complaints and parasites.
