Tree Turmeric + Homatropine Methylbromide, Hydrocodone
Homatropine Methylbromide, Hydrocodone brand names: Hycodan, Tussigon.
Homatropine Methylbromide, Hydrocodone falls into 3 drug categories that Tree Turmeric can interact with; the most serious is rated moderate. Theoretically, use of tree turmeric along with CNS depressants might increase the risk of additive therapeutic and adverse effects.

These two interact in 3 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 3 Interactions?
Tree Turmeric interacts with whole categories of medication. Homatropine Methylbromide, Hydrocodone falls into 3 of those categories, so it can interact with Tree Turmeric in 3 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
CNS DEPRESSANTS
1 of 3Why this applies to Homatropine Methylbromide, Hydrocodone
Homatropine Methylbromide, Hydrocodone falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Tree Turmeric interacts with.
Animal research suggests that berberine, a constituent of tree turmeric, can have sedative effects.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Hycodan combines hydrocodone, an opioid cough suppressant, with homatropine. The hydrocodone side already slows down your brain and breathing, causing drowsiness, dizziness, and that foggy, sleepy feeling many people notice. Tree turmeric (berberine) isn't broken down into something stronger here, but in animal studies it showed mild sedative effects of its own.
So the concern is simply adding two calming things together. Used at the same time, they might leave you more drowsy or lightheaded than the medicine alone would. I'll be honest with you, this is theoretical and based only on animal research, not strong human data, so it's not a major alarm. Still, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing them, especially if your dose makes you sleepy.

CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES
2 of 3Homatropine Methylbromide, Hydrocodone also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES.
In vitro research and preliminary clinical evidence suggest that berberine, a constituent of tree turmeric, can inhibit CYP2D6.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the tricky part with this combo. The hydrocodone in Hycodan or Tussigon is a bit of a special case. It works partly on its own, but your body also uses an enzyme called CYP2D6 to turn some of it into a stronger painkiller (hydromorphone). The berberine in tree turmeric can mildly block that enzyme. In theory, that could shift how much pain relief you feel, while still leaving plenty of the parent drug around to cause typical effects like drowsiness, constipation, dry mouth, and slowed breathing.
Honestly, this is mostly lab-based and theoretical, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Still, since hydrocodone affects breathing, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing the two, especially at concentrated supplement doses.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
3 of 3Homatropine Methylbromide, Hydrocodone also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.
In vitro research and preliminary clinical evidence suggest that berberine, a constituent of tree turmeric, moderately inhibits CYP3A4.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here's the gist for Hycodan (which combines hydrocodone, a cough suppressant and opioid, with homatropine). The hydrocodone part is processed by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. Berberine, the active compound in tree turmeric, appears to slow that enzyme down a bit. So in theory, the supplement could let more hydrocodone hang around in your system than usual.
What might that look like? Possibly stronger opioid effects, like extra drowsiness, dizziness, constipation, or slowed breathing if levels climb too high. The good news is this is mostly a theoretical concern. Still, since opioids carry real risks, I'd run it by your pharmacist or doctor before pairing tree turmeric with this medicine, especially if you take it regularly.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Homatropine Methylbromide, Hydrocodone page
“Hycodan (homatropine with hydrocodone) is an opioid cough medicine, so the real danger on this list is anything that deepens sedation or slows breathing, and 78 of the 233 supplements and herbs on file do exactly that. Alcohol, whether beer or wine, sits among the 11 major-rated entries with solid human evidence behind it.”

Tree turmeric (Berberis aristata) is a shrub used in traditional Indian (Ayurvedic) medicine, valued mainly for its berberine content.
