Theoretically, tree turmeric might increase the levels and clinical effects of drugs that are substrates of CYP3A4.
In vitro research and preliminary clinical evidence suggest that berberine, a constituent of tree turmeric, moderately inhibits CYP3A4.

Here's the thing to know about pairing tree turmeric with quinine. Your body clears quinine using a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. The berberine in tree turmeric appears to slow that enzyme down, so quinine could clear more slowly and build up to higher levels than expected.

Quinine is active as-is (it isn't a prodrug), so more of it in your system can mean stronger effects and a bigger chance of side effects like ringing in the ears, headache, dizziness, nausea, or in higher amounts heart rhythm changes. The evidence here is mostly lab-based plus some early human data, so this is more theoretical than proven. Concentrated berberine supplements are more likely to matter than tiny culinary amounts. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

What Is Quinine Used For?

Brand name: Qualaquin

Quinine sulfate capsules (brands Qualaquin and Quinine Sulfate) are approved to treat uncomplicated Plasmodium falciparum malaria in adults. This includes strains of malaria that have become resistant to chloroquine.

Quinine sulfate capsules are not approved for severe or complicated malaria, for preventing malaria, or for treating or preventing nocturnal leg cramps. Using them for leg cramps carries serious risks that outweigh any potential benefit.
