Tronadora and Albiglutide

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIDIABETES DRUGS

Why this applies to Albiglutide

Albiglutide falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Tronadora interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use of tronadora and antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia. Clinical research suggests that a combination of tronadora and Guazuma ulmifolia reduce levels of fasting glucose in patients with type 2 diabetes, including those already taking antidiabetes agents. The effect of tronadora alone is unknown. Animal research is conflicting.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence B

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: both Tronadora and your Albiglutide (Tanzeum) push your blood sugar in the same direction, which is down. Albiglutide is a weekly injection that helps your pancreas release insulin and lowers blood sugar after meals. Tronadora is a folk tea that may also nudge sugar lower, though the proof in people is thin. The worry is that stacking the two could lower your sugar a bit too much.

Watch for signs of low blood sugar, like shakiness, sweating, dizziness, a fast heartbeat, or feeling confused. This isn't a strong, well-proven interaction, mostly theory plus one weak study, so don't panic. But please check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding Tronadora, and keep monitoring your numbers if they say it's okay.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Albiglutide page

“People injecting albiglutide (Tanzeum) once a week for type 2 diabetes are often the same people eyeing supplements marketed for blood sugar, and that overlap is exactly where this list calls for real vigilance. Every one of the 239 ingredients on file touches glucose control in some way, most by adding to albiglutide's glucose-lowerin…”

About Tronadora

What is Tronadora?

  • Blood sugar control / diabetes
  • Digestive complaints
  • Mild fever
  • Yeast or fungal concerns
  • Traditional 'tonic' use

Tronadora (Tecoma stans) is a flowering shrub used in Mexican and Latin American folk medicine, most often as a tea for diabetes and digestive complaints. Human evidence is very limited, so it should not replace proven treatments. Because it may affect blood sugar and its safety is not well studied, talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it—and avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
