Tronadora and Dapagliflozin

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIDIABETES DRUGS

Why this applies to Dapagliflozin

Dapagliflozin falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Tronadora interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use of tronadora and antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia. Clinical research suggests that a combination of tronadora and Guazuma ulmifolia reduce levels of fasting glucose in patients with type 2 diabetes, including those already taking antidiabetes agents. The effect of tronadora alone is unknown. Animal research is conflicting.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence B

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: Tronadora is a folk-remedy tea that may nudge your blood sugar down on its own. Your Farxiga (dapagliflozin) already works to lower blood sugar by helping your kidneys flush extra glucose out through your urine. Stack the two together and you could push your numbers lower than you intended, which raises the odds of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), especially if you also take insulin or a sulfonylurea.

Watch for shakiness, sweating, a fast heartbeat, dizziness, or feeling confused. I'll be honest, the evidence here is thin. The studies pairing tronadora with another herb hinted at a glucose-lowering effect, but tronadora's effect by itself isn't really known, and animal data conflict. Before adding this tea, please check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

About Tronadora

What is Tronadora?

  • Blood sugar control / diabetes
  • Digestive complaints
  • Mild fever
  • Yeast or fungal concerns
  • Traditional 'tonic' use

Tronadora (Tecoma stans) is a flowering shrub used in Mexican and Latin American folk medicine, most often as a tea for diabetes and digestive complaints. Human evidence is very limited, so it should not replace proven treatments. Because it may affect blood sugar and its safety is not well studied, talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it—and avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
