Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: nalbuphine (Nubain) is a strong pain medicine that already makes many people feel drowsy, foggy, or relaxed. Yerba mansa is thought to have its own mild calming, sedative-leaning qualities. The concern on file is that pairing the two might add up, so you could end up more sleepy or slower-thinking than you would expect from the nalbuphine alone.

I want to be honest that this is a theoretical caution based on how these things behave, not on solid human studies, so it is not something to panic about. Still, since nalbuphine is usually given around procedures or for real pain, play it safe. Let your pharmacist or doctor know you take yerba mansa so they can watch for extra drowsiness or dizziness.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Nalbuphine page

“Nalbuphine (Nubain) is an opioid pain reliever, which by itself raises the stakes of this page. Nearly four in five of the ingredients listed deepen sedation, layering their own drowsiness onto a medicine that already slows the brain and can slow breathing.”
