The iodine in dulse is the main thing we watch. It could shift thyroid function, which matters most for people taking thyroid hormone or antithyroid drugs, and clinical research has linked dulse to a measurable rise in thyroid stimulating hormone levels. The same iodine concern applies to amiodarone, a heart rhythm drug that already carries a large iodine load. Dulse is also rich in potassium, so pairing it with digoxin or potassium-sparing diuretics could in theory push potassium too high, though this has not been shown in humans.

Amiodarine (Cordarone)
Theoretically, combining dulse with amiodarone might cause excessively high iodine levels.
Dulse is rich in iodine, and amiodarone contains 37.3% iodine and can increase iodine levels.
Antithyroid Drugs
Theoretically, due to its iodine content, dulse might alter the effects of antithyroid drugs.
Dulse is rich in iodine. Iodine in high doses has been reported to cause both hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism, depending on the individual's past medical history.
Digoxin (Lanoxin)
Theoretically, dulse might increase the risk of hyperkalemia when taken with digoxin.
Dulse is rich in potassium, and digoxin can increase potassium levels in the blood. This interaction has not been demonstrated in humans.
Thyroid Hormone
Theoretically, due to its iodine content, dulse might alter the effects of thyroid hormone.
Dulse is rich in iodine. Iodine in high doses has been reported to cause both hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism, depending on the individual's past medical history. Although dulse has been associated with a statistically significant increase in thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) levels in clinical research, clinically significant increases have not been documented.
Ace Inhibitors (Aceis)
Theoretically, dulse might increase the risk of hyperkalemia when taken with ACEIs.
Dulse is rich in potassium. ACEIs block the actions of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system and reduce potassium excretion. Concomitant use of these drugs with moderate dietary potassium intake (about 3775-5200 mg daily) does not increase serum potassium levels. However, using these drugs while consuming dulse in quantities that provide larger amounts of potassium daily might increase the risk of hyperkalemia. Additionally, in vitro research suggests that dulse protein hydrolysates inhibit the activity of ACE. However, these effects have not been demonstrated in humans.
Angiotensin Receptor Blockers (Arbs)
Theoretically, dulse might increase the risk of hyperkalemia when taken with ARBs.
Dulse is rich in potassium. ARBs block the actions of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system and reduce potassium excretion. Concomitant use of these drugs with moderate dietary potassium intake (about 3775-5200 mg daily) does not increase serum potassium levels. However, using these drugs while consuming dulse in quantities that provide higher amounts of potassium daily might increase the risk of hyperkalemia. Potassium-Sparing Diuretics
Theoretically, dulse might increase the risk of hyperkalemia when taken with potassium-sparing diuretics.
Dulse is rich in potassium, and potassium-sparing diuretics can increase potassium levels in the blood. This interaction has not been shown in humans.

Overview
Dulse (Palmaria palmata) is a red seaweed that grows along the cold, rocky coasts of the northern Atlantic and Pacific oceans, including northern Europe, North America, and parts of Japan. People have harvested and eaten it for centuries, especially in places like Ireland, Iceland, and Canada's Maritime provinces.
It is most often used as a food. Dulse can be eaten dried as a chewy snack, sprinkled as flakes onto soups and salads, or ground into a powder. More recently it has been sold as a dietary supplement in capsule or powder form, often marketed as a natural source of minerals and protein.
How it works
Dulse naturally contains a mix of nutrients and plant compounds. It is a good source of iodine, which the body needs to make thyroid hormones, and it also provides potassium, protein, fiber, and various vitamins and minerals.
Researchers have identified polyphenols and peptides in dulse that, in test-tube and animal studies, appear to act as antioxidants and may influence inflammation and blood pressure. It is important to understand that these are proposed mechanisms based on early laboratory research and may not translate into clear benefits in people.

Safety & precautions
Eaten in normal food amounts, dulse is generally considered safe for most healthy people. The main concerns come from its high iodine and potassium content, which can become significant with concentrated supplements or large servings.
People with thyroid conditions (such as overactive or underactive thyroid) should be cautious, because too much iodine can disrupt thyroid function. People with kidney disease or those told to limit potassium should also be careful, since the body may struggle to clear extra potassium. Like other seaweeds, dulse can also absorb heavy metals from the ocean, so product quality matters.
For pregnancy and breastfeeding, food amounts are likely fine, but concentrated supplements should be avoided because their iodine content can be unpredictable and limited safety data exist. When in doubt, choose food over supplements and check with your doctor or pharmacist.
Side effects
Dulse is usually well tolerated as a food. Possible side effects include digestive upset, such as bloating or gas, especially when eaten in large amounts.
Because of its iodine content, excessive intake can affect the thyroid and may cause symptoms related to too much or too little thyroid hormone over time. Very high potassium intake could be a concern for people with kidney problems. Allergic reactions are uncommon but possible. Stop using it and seek medical care if you notice signs of an allergic reaction.
Dosing
There is no established standardized medicinal dose for dulse. As a food it is eaten in small amounts as flakes, snacks, or a recipe ingredient.
If you use a dulse supplement, follow the directions on the product label and do not exceed the recommended amount. Because iodine and potassium content can vary a lot between products, it is wise to check with a pharmacist or doctor before taking it regularly, particularly if you have thyroid or kidney concerns.
