Some people can have an allergic reaction — especially those sensitive to the daisy family (ragweed, chrysanthemums, marigolds, and related plants). Rarely, severe allergic shock (anaphylaxis) has been reported in people sensitive to inulin, a fiber in artichoke.

A meta-analysis of small clinical studies shows that taking artichoke leaf extract for 8-12 weeks can modestly reduce fasting plasma glucose when compared with placebo.
