Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

Banaba by Herbal Terra is a liquid extract made from the dried leaf of Lagerstroemia speciosa, a plant traditionally used in herbal medicine. This product contains 1 active ingredient — that banaba leaf extract — suspended in a liquid base (menstruum), which is an inactive ingredient that helps deliver the extract.

Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not assessable

This is a single-ingredient Banaba product and its label doesn't state a use — see Banaba's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • We looked at the product name, claims, and label statements and couldn't find a stated purpose to grade.

The evidence for banaba isn't solid enough to rate it as effective. Our data shows insufficient reliable evidence for its use in diabetes, prediabetes, and metabolic syndrome — the conditions it's typically promoted for.

That doesn't mean it doesn't work; it means the human studies we have aren't robust enough yet to say one way or the other.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Banaba extract appears to be generally well tolerated in short-term studies, but how it performs over months or years isn't well established, so we can't make a full safety claim for long-term use. In one product containing both banaba and another herb, some people reported dizziness, headache, tremor, weakness, stomach upset, sweating, heart palpitations, and shakiness — though it's unclear whether banaba alone caused these or if the other ingredient was responsible.

The safety data advises against use during pregnancy and breastfeeding, so if you're pregnant or nursing, skip this product and talk with your doctor or pharmacist about alternatives.

The most serious documented interaction for these ingredients is Moderate. Check your medications for a personalized result.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Banaba.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Moderate.
  • Some involve high-stakes drug classes: diabetes medications.
  • For scale: 299 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

Check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking this if you're on diabetes medications, blood pressure medications, or any drugs that depend on a specific intestinal/liver transport system (OATP substrates) for absorption. All three are moderate-severity interaction risks.

No interactions are documented in our data for any other medication types, but your pharmacist can confirm your specific drugs.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.

Banaba might interest you if you're looking into herbal options for blood sugar or metabolic health, but the evidence of effectiveness isn't there yet. Because it can lower blood sugar and blood pressure, it's not for you if you're already on medications for either — you'll need to check with your own doctor or pharmacist before combining them.

Avoid it if you're pregnant or breastfeeding. Run your medication list through the tool on this page before starting.

Banaba by Herbal Terra: Common Questions

Does Banaba by Herbal Terra interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Banaba has a known interaction with 299 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Banaba contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Will banaba help me control my blood sugar?
We don't have enough solid evidence to say whether it works for that. The studies so far aren't robust enough to rate it as effective for diabetes or prediabetes, though animal and some human research suggests it might lower blood glucose. Talk to your doctor about whether it's worth trying alongside your regular care.
Can I take banaba if I'm already on diabetes medication?
You'll need to check with your own doctor or pharmacist first. Banaba can lower blood glucose levels, and so do diabetes drugs — together they might cause your sugar to drop too much. Your healthcare provider can tell you if it's safe for your specific situation and medications.
Is banaba safe to use long-term?
It appears well tolerated in short studies, but we don't have good data on how safe it is over months or years. If you're thinking of taking it for a while, talk with your pharmacist about monitoring and any concerns.
What are the side effects?
Banaba extract appears to be well tolerated overall. In one product that combined it with another herb, some people reported dizziness, headache, tremor, weakness, stomach upset, sweating, heart palpitations, and shakiness — though it's not clear banaba alone was the cause.
Can I take banaba while pregnant or breastfeeding?
No — the safety data advises against it during pregnancy and while nursing. If you're pregnant or breastfeeding, talk with your doctor or pharmacist about other options that may be safer for you and your baby.
