Burdock is generally well tolerated when eaten as food and used short-term in healthy adults, though human safety data are limited. Serious allergic reactions, including contact dermatitis and anaphylaxis, are rare but have been reported.

One case of liver injury was documented in someone taking an herbal tea containing burdock and other ingredients, but it's unclear whether burdock itself was responsible. Contact dermatitis, sometimes occurring days after using burdock plasters or root oil, has also been noted in a small number of people.

Do not use medicinal amounts during pregnancy — the safety data don't exist, and burdock may have effects on the uterus. Avoid medicinal use while breastfeeding as well, because there isn't enough safety information.

Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs

Theoretically, taking burdock with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs might increase the risk of bleeding.

In vitro research shows that lignans from burdock reduce rabbit platelet aggregation by inhibiting platelet activating factor. This interaction has not been reported in humans.
