Moderate evidence
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Moderate

Some clinical evidence supports this product's ingredients for its stated purpose, but it isn't conclusive.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: circulation and vein health support.
  • We looked for evidence on: Chronic venous insufficiency (CVI), Varicose veins, Hemorrhoids, leg swelling, venous insufficiency.
  • The strongest evidence on file: Butcher's Broom is rated "Possibly Effective" for Chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Butcher's Broom is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Hemorrhoids, Varicose veins.

Butcher's broom has been rated possibly effective for chronic venous insufficiency (CVI)—a condition where veins struggle to return blood from the legs. For other uses—diabetic retinopathy, hemorrhoids, orthostatic hypotension (low blood pressure when standing), and lymphedema—the evidence we have is insufficient to rate whether it works.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Butcher's broom is generally well tolerated in the short term for most healthy adults, though long-term safety data is limited. The most common side effects from taking it by mouth are digestive upset: diarrhea, indigestion, nausea, vomiting, heartburn, and gastritis.

One case report documented severe vomiting and diarrhea after 5 days of use in someone with diabetes, leading to dehydration and hospitalization. If applied to skin, it may cause contact dermatitis (an itchy, inflamed rash) in sensitive people.

Safety has not been established during pregnancy, so it's best avoided then. Not enough safety data exists for breastfeeding—talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether it's right for you if you're nursing.

Before taking this product, check with your pharmacist or doctor if you use alpha-adrenergic agonists (like pseudoephedrine in cold medicines or phenylephrine) or alpha-adrenergic antagonists (like doxazosin or terazosin for blood pressure). Butcher's broom may either strengthen or weaken how these drugs work, depending on which type you're on.
