What’s inside
Low disclosure
Flora Biotic Ultra contains 15 active ingredients: a prebiotic fiber (NutraFlora scFOS, a type of fructo-oligosaccharide) and a proprietary blend of 14 probiotic strains. The probiotic strains we could verify are Bifidobacterium breve, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacterium longum, Bifidobacterium bifidum, Streptococcus thermophilus, Lactobacillus delbrueckii, and Lactobacillus helveticus.
Three others—Lactobacillus plantarum, L. casei, and L. salivarius—are present but we don't have detailed data on file. The inactive ingredients are potato starch, plant-derived capsule material, an aqueous-enteric coating, magnesium stearate, and ascorbic acid.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence for what this product does is mixed and often uncertain. For the prebiotic (FOS), we don't have reliable evidence yet for osteoporosis, constipation, diabetes, travelers' diarrhea, or high cholesterol.
For the probiotics we could check: Lactobacillus acidophilus is possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome, H. pylori infection, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and bacterial vaginosis. Bifidobacterium bifidum is possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome and respiratory tract infections.
For the other probiotic strains, evidence is insufficient to rate most claims. The data we hold doesn't establish that Flora Biotic Ultra works for any particular condition.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
The probiotics in this product are generally well tolerated in healthy people. The most common side effects from FOS and probiotics are bloating, flatulence, and abdominal pain or discomfort—usually mild, especially at lower doses.
The data notes that rare but serious infections (bacteremia, sepsis) have been reported with probiotic use, mostly in critically ill or severely immunocompromised patients, preterm infants, or those with indwelling catheters. For Lactobacillus acidophilus, pregnancy is rated possibly safe; safety data during lactation is not on file.
For Bifidobacterium longum and B. bifidum, both pregnancy and lactation are rated possibly safe. For the other checked probiotics, pregnancy and lactation data are not on file.
If you're pregnant, nursing, critically ill, or have a weakened immune system, talk with your doctor or pharmacist before starting.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
The key medication type to watch for is antibiotics. Taking them at the same time as this product might reduce the effectiveness of the probiotics.
Separate your antibiotic dose from this supplement by at least a few hours—ask your pharmacist for a specific schedule. No other drug types are documented to interact with the ingredients we could check.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Flora Biotic Ultra is a multi-strain probiotic with a prebiotic—most useful if you're considering it for irritable bowel syndrome or antibiotic-associated diarrhea, where some of its ingredients show promise. The main caution is separating it from antibiotics by several hours so the live organisms aren't killed.
If you're pregnant, nursing, severely ill, or immunocompromised, check with your doctor or pharmacist first.
